Umberto Eco’s Anti-Library
I’ve been educated or at least that’s what I’m told
I half know right from wrong I guess, I’m growing wise, I’m growing old
Beards, wrinkles, scars and tired eyes are the lived depictions of
Immunity from the inductive flaws we base our knowledge on
The floorboards are creaking beneath the weight of the books I’ve not read
The air is stuffy, pregnant with the sound of the words we’ve not said but we feel
I wish my mind was brilliant, I wish I could be profound
I’d dissect the fearful systems of money, guns and power
But instead I’m damned to be a boy who just keeps jerking off
I don’t know quantum mechanics, can’t play Rachmaninov
I’ve often, eluded to the idea that I’m full of shit
These essays of idleness are a mess of a bachelors half baked ideas
And so I go on with my prayer beads, and canned laughter and all manner of things in which I needn’t worry, needn’t bother, don’t need effort, I’ll recycle and I’ll feel very good, morally mobile, sanctimonious, karma harmonious, perfectly entitled to preach, yeah I’ve read it, yeah I’ve read that, I know the pros and of I course I even know all the cons, I keep balanced, balanced opinions, balanced diet, so well adjusted I’m entitled to speak, on a number, on a variety, on a range topics plucked from online aggregators
Borges, Soyinka, yeah I know, I can name drop with the best
But I won’t watch Geordie Shore, if I do I’ll feign disinterest
My high-mindedness is a ritual, I’m bound for hell I’m sure
But I’m not talking fire and brimstone, my Lucifer’s a metaphor
I’ve half heard that Opera, the one with the death, the one with the songs
I’ve half seen that movie, the one by that French guy, some maverick auteur who fiddles his tax
